Aristoxenus (Greek: Ἀριστόξενος) of Tarentum (4th century BC) was a Greek philosopher, and writer on music and rhythm.
His writings, were in the style of Aristotle, and dealt with philosophy, ethics and music.
In music he held that the notes of the scale are to be judged, not by mathematical ratio, but by the ear.

A stony silence closed in on the house, punctuated by the stentorian breathing, which appeared to me the creaking of hinges of a prison gate, opening at the command of a soul going into freedom.
